Dreaming Underwater

I could see it coming; the lake a few feet ahead. I could tell the direction my car was headed from the glow of the headlights. I was going to drive straight into that body of water, and I couldn’t stop it from happening. My heart raced as I felt a shift in gravity, the front end of the car suddenly perpendicular to the ground. I looked for an escape, the driver’s side window, the sunroof, and the door that’s weight was much too strong behind the pressure of the murky lake water. I panicked, pushing and punching, suddenly realizing I could breathe. Air was still filling my lungs, as I swam around the interior of the vehicle. It wasn’t fear that was driving the escape, but rather frustration. It was as though my car being underwater was suddenly an uneventful annoyance, something everyone dealt with one time or another. I was trapped, able to breathe, my life unthreatened. The daily grind at its finest.
